17/11/2008    ECHA publishes intermediate list of pre-registered substances

The closing date, December 1st 2008, for the REACH pre-registration is very near.  A temporary intermediate list of substances which were pre-registered by November 1st 2008 is published by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

The purpose of this intermediate list is to give Downstream Users the possibility to determine whether substances of their interest are already pre-registered.

If not they can remind their manufacturers and importers that they can only benefit from the transitional regime described in Article 23 of the REACH Regulation if they have pre-registered their substances.

Otherwise they will have to submit immediately registrations for their substances.

The list can be downloaded from the ECHA website:

The ECHA intends to publish the final pre-registration list of substances in January 2009.

As soon as possible after publication his list will also be included in Royal Haskoning's online Database of Dangerous Substances:  EaSI-Pro, the most complete and up to date, reliable source of more than 250.000 substances. Besides the fact to know if a substance is pre-registered you can find additional and valuable related information of these substances within our extended Database EaSI-Pro e.g. about classification and labelling.

Many companies appear unprepared to meet looming REACH deadline

Despite a 1 December 2008 deadline, some companies have not taken adequate steps to comply REACH, according to a survey released today by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The survey, entitled ‘Waking up to REACH', found that two in five companies have limited awareness of the regulation.

Preparation for REACH outside Europe and the chemicals industry is particularly low. This could cause significant business disruption through supply chains.

PricewaterhouseCoopers surveyed 241 senior executives across six industries in 29 countries to gauge readiness and reaction to REACH. When asked what action companies were most likely to take as a result of the REACH legislation, an overwhelming 66% said to ensure suppliers adhere to REACH compliance deadlines, otherwise known as supply chain assurance.
